There are a lot of scoring rules: you lose points when somebody cries or gets hurt in another room. You lose if somebody is in danger in the kitchen.
Here is a typical commentary from the announcers, there are two - the play by play announcer and the color commentator.
PbP: So far the preparation has gone well, he has all the ingredients chopped and prepared and the kids have been playing well together without screaming.
PbP: Uh, oh, Alex just bit Evan in the other room and Dad didn't see it. Lets see how he handles this first challenge of the day.
Cc: Its early for this sort of challenge. This could set the tone for the rest of the meal.
PbP: Dad has left the kitchen and gone in the other room. It looks like Alex is getting a timeout and Evan is being hugged.
Cc: That bite and crying cost him some time and points.
PbP: Dad has Evan calmed down now, but you are right, that will cost him time. He hasn't even got the water boiling yet.
Cc: He is close on that water. It shouldn't be too long. One of the interesting things about this challenge is that you can only use the back two burners on the stove. Otherwise you run the risk of leaving a dangerous stove open to the twins.
PbP: Dad has the water boiling now and is starting the pasta. Alex is out of time out now and is crying in the kitchen trying to get Dad's attention. Lets see what he does here. He can pick him up and try to calm him down or ignore him and work on dinner. Either way, he is losing time here.
Cc: Its a tricky trade-off, picking him up doesn't guarantee that he will stop crying.
PbP: Looks like dad is going for distraction. He has offered him a matchbox car.
Cc: That seems to be helping. We'll have to see how the judges score that.
PpP: Did you see that! When he offered the matchbox car, he left a knife on counter within reach of the twins.
Cc: How long do you think it will take them to notice?
PbP: Not Long! Look at that, Evan has the knife. This could be the end of the match if Dad doesn't notice soon.
PbP: That was a close one. Dad noticed just before our judges had to intervene.
...
PbP: Now its time for Dad to drain the pasta and take the bread out of the oven. This is a tricky moment. Put the kids in a different room and they will certainly cry, but leave them in the kitchen and you risk a dangerous situation. Right now, Alex and Evan aren't near dad, but it looks like he takes the always safe route of gating them off for a few minutes.
Cc: I think that is the right choice. You lose points for crying, but everybody is safe and that is what really matter.
...
PbP: Uh oh, Dad's dropped the watermelon on the way to the table.
Cc: Will he wash it off, discard it and cut some more, or go with the 5 second rule? I'm not a big fan of the 5 second rule with wet foods like that. Lets see...
PbP: He picked it right up and put it on the table like nothing happened. You know, that is probably good for his kids immune systems in the long run and that didn't cost him any points. A good decision I think.
Cc: Me too.
...
PbP: We've just got word from our tracking team that Mom is almost home. He has about 2 minutes to finish getting the table set, hands washed and everybody down for dinner.
Cc: Its going to be close.
Pbp: Mom's pulling into the driveway now. Yup, Evan has seen her. He screams Mom! and Dad knows his time is almost up.
Cc: He is almost there. Just bibs and water to go.
PbP: Mom's walking up the steps now. Bibs and waters are coming to the table.
PbP: He made it!
Cc: Lets see how this meal is received.
...
PbP: Wow, Evan really doesn't like that dish does he. He has thrown it all over the table.
Cc: Dad really should have known better than to make an egg-based dish for dinner. What is he going to do now? Evan needs something to eat.
PbP: he has gone for frozen blueberries. Popular, but that will cost him cleanup time.
...
PbP: A good effort from Dad today. I think he could have done better with his meal selection, but he handled the interruptions and dangers well.
Cc: I'd like to see him do better when his knife placement in the future. That was a scary moment.
PbP: Indeed. I'm sure he'll take the feedback from the judges and do better tomorrow.
PbP: Here are some images from tonight's meal:

Evan really enjoyed those blueberries

Oh, but he played hide and seek after. That will cost more cleanup time. Its straight to bath tonight!

Alex also enjoyed the blueberries but what is he going to do with that spoon? That could cost them points for physical damage.
